I'm a 1976 Laura, and have had no trouble with people mispronouncing my name.  99.9% of the time people get it right (LOR-ah; LAH-rah is spelled Lara).  I love my name: it's strong and classic and not often heard.

It depends on what part of the country you are in...I’m from the south and most people pronounced Laura Lar-uh (this is not my name but I have a good friend w the name). I had never heard anyone pronounce it Lor-uh until I moved to Chicago.

Anyway, I like the list.

Laura, Katherine (if I used this name I would nn Kate), Jennifer (nn Jenny), and Anna are my favorites.

Ellen I’ve just never liked the name for some reason. Don’t like the way it sounds. Elizabeth, though it’s my middle name and I have several good friends w the name, I have never liked it either. Claire is ok but I like it better as a middle name than as a first.[/quote]

I had a friend named Laura who made it very clear to people that her name was not pronounced Lor-ah. She always said that her mom would have spelled it Lora if she’d wanted it pronounced that way.

I think it’s just like people who prefer that a full name be used, with no nicknames.  As a parent, you just have to be insistent that people pronounce the name the way you prefer.

And Lara is pronounced like Larry with an a instead of a y. Not similar to Laura at all. Example, Lara Spencer.

I’m the pp you’re responding to and I agree you have to make it clear how to pronounce your name. Also, part of the point of the whole post above is that people pronounce names differently. Not everyone pronounces Laura Lore-uh and not everyone pronounces Lara Lair-uh. Some people do indeed pronounce both Laura and Lara as Larr-uh. I know because I was on a soccer team w a Lara and a Laura who both pronounced their names Larr-uh.
