OP - I totally get where you're coming from. I am a working mom with a 3-year-old and definitely use alcohol as a crutch. I never get drunk/trashed, and I never have a hangover, but once I finally get home from a long commute on the beltway with a screaming/crying/whiny/hungry kid my 'reward' is usually milk for her and a glass of wine for me. I always stop at 9pm, and usually mix white wine with lots of soda water. But still, this happens every day. I periodically take a few weeks or a month off at a time, and have no problem quitting when there's a reason, but day-to-day it's hard to abstain. It's definitely a coping mechanism.
I think the only thing you need to worry about, PP, is if the alcohol eventually creeps up from one glass every night to two or more. It can happen very gradually. It did for me, and I realized that I was having more days with 2 glasses of wine (or occasionally 3) than I was days with 0 glasses or 1. I realized my alcohol use had very subtly crept up from my 20's to my 30's to my 40's, and the increase was almost entirely traceable to when I had a kid and encountered a different sort of stress/isolation than I'd had before. I'm in the process of cutting WAY back on alcohol. Started with "0 alcohol on weeknights at home" and moved to "cutting way back on weekends" and may ultimately quit altogether if moderation doesn't work. Alcohol figures fairly heavily into my social life so I have to strike that balance of not isolating myself, which would make my life worse, not better. But as long as you're sticking to 1 glass a night, I don't think you are in problem territory.
