My experience is they move the stronger players up to the field next to the main coach to has a closer look and whatever's happening on all other fields don't matter.
It does matter, since they’re likely cutting some of those kids.
DP. Sure, but once you start moving away from the head coaches, they’re not looking at you as much because someone else has already decided you’re not so likely to make it. Instead, they’re looking more at the kids who just moved closer based on the last game, to decide if they should advance further. Also, scoring a bunch of goals isn’t the only thing they’re judging the kids on, you have to look at the whole context of the tryout. If they tell you to pass three times before shooting and your kid passes after two because he’s not paying attention or isn’t interest in doing what the coaches tell them, that’s a mark against them. Even without such an instruction, if your kid scores three goals in a game because they took 15 shots instead of looking for open teammates to pass to, that’s a mark against them. Kids have made it onto ADP without scoring a single goal at tryouts if their playing demonstrates a strong awareness of field position and other technical skills, and the only reason the kid didn’t score was because he realized someone should play defense while everyone else is trying to play striker.
