It makes it clear to passing drivers that you need to actually use the passing lane to get by and not try to squeeze through. There's nothing wrong with "taking the lane." I take the lane as a bicyclist regularly. I do by riding in the center of a general travel lane, not on the left of it (see for example where a sharrows is generally placed) That makes it impossible to pass me in lane, but also assures me three feet from a car that has passed just across the yellow line. I do not know any cyclists who ride to the left of the center of the general travel lane they are taking. [/quote]
