Doesn't your logic mean you shouldn't have a car if you have a young child???

We all take risks.  Pools require mitigating the risks by securing them from young children.  Do you mitigate the risk of leaving your child in a car by keeping your purse in the backsest or having an alarm system?

Life has risks.  Parents have to minimize risks by having redindant safety measures.[/quote]

Not that pp, but we live in Florida and enjoy our pool from spring to early fall.  What might seem optional in colder climates becomes pretty darned necessary in a more tropical environment.  Our pool is fenced with a locking gate.  No small child is going to wander onto our pool deck and fall in.

The Smiths live in Texas where it can also get relentlessly hot during the summer time.  They may have all been outside playing in the pool when this happened.  I don't know what happened but my heart goes out to that family.  What a tragedy.[/quote]

By that logic only selfish people would take their children on beach vacations, to hotel swimming pools or anywhere near a body of water.  Ever.

A 3 year old could turn on the water faucet.  Most 3 year olds are potty trained or in the process of being potty trained so they could easily be in the bathroom unattended at times and would have the opportunity to fill up the tub with water.  That would be easier than trying to scale a pool fence.[/quote]
