I can't believe people are cool with 5 year olds jumping on a couch in public. You say it should be expected at a rec center? What if it were a library? Or the mall? Or the waiting area in the ER? Or restaurant? 5 isn't 2. A 2 year old is apt to do such a thing, but most parents would immediately correct the behavior. But a 5 year old? He should know better.
Library: Well no not at all since it is a place for quiet sedate behavior Mall: I would put this in the same category as the rec center and not care as long as they were not infringing on another person's space. Ma;;s are boisterous and loud. Waiting area at the ER: How long have we been waiting? How crowded is the ER? If its empty and we've been there for an hour I'd probably look the other way. If there's a bunch of sad looking people no way. If we've been there for 10 minutes and they're bouncing around then no. Restaurant: There are sofas at restaurants? Since this is a place where people expect to sit and eat in peace then no it would clearly not be appropriate to play and goof off here. A rec center's PURPOSE is rec.
