I can't believe people are cool with 5 year olds jumping on a couch in public. You say it should be expected at a rec center? What if it were a library? Or the mall? Or the waiting area in the ER? Or restaurant? 5 isn't 2. A 2 year old is apt to do such a thing, but most parents would immediately correct the behavior. But a 5 year old? He should know better.
Um yeah, no... I’m a nanny. Every single one of my charges, preverbal and verbal would hold out their hands to me if they wanted to jump, and the verbal kids would ask. Not a single one would jump on a couch in public, and that includes kids medicated for impulse control behaviors. There’s a line between acceptable behavior and not. Of course, if it had been me, I would have stood up and held out my hands while asking him how high he could jump. But I seem to step into the parental role for random kids frequently when the actual parents are present or checked out.
