This. The teachers who have every lesson planned out at the beginning of the semester tend to be the Department Chairs who have been in the county forever, think they have awesome lessons, and complain about behavior of students getting worse and worse every year. Great teachers have the semester loosely planned out, know what major assignments they want to give and what standards they want to hit, and then tailor lessons to what their specific students need. The teachers who are most helpful to new teachers are the ones who share their lessons as they go and talk through how they could be modified to fit the new teachers needs. I will never forget my first year teaching and my assignment “mentor” who taught AAP while I taught all Gen Ed sections. The mentor gave me all of his lessons in a binder at the beginning of the quarter and said “good luck.” I ended up befriending a SpEd teacher who coached me through that first year and taught me how to differentiate lessons.[/quote]
