I hate to be a b**** but why do people always say "oh four children lost their mother, so sad." Yes, but she's a woman separate and apart from being a mother. It's sad whether she had children or not. I hate this notion that women only "matter" and their deaths are only "sad" if they're mothers. This is sad regardless. And yes, I have children. I am not anti-children, but this grates on my nerves. OK, carry on arguing about whether she did drugs....
Sorry but if your friends lose you it is sad but when children lose a mom it is devastating to their whole world. It is a bigger deal for a child to lose a mom and it is a bigger deal for parents to lose a child.
But the PP wasn't comparing scales of loss in the personal sphere. They are saying that a person matters whether or not s/he had children and that this woman's death is sad not only due to the fact that she leaves children behind but also because she is an artist the world will no longer have. In fact, it can be argued that she is known because of her art and we are discussing her because this and her relationship to Diddy not because she was a mother. To put it another way - Steve Jobs was a father of four when he lost his battle to cancer. I'm sure his kids were sad but the outpouring of grief was because the world lost an innovative tech genius who couldn't be replaced.
