It’s fairly clear to me that Elrich and his supporters are now trying to sell him as a moderate. I’ve lived in Takoma Park too long to buy that. I want businesses to locate here. I want younger people to want to move here. I want the tax base to increase. I want a county executive who will be able to work with other leaders, not alienate them. Elrich is not the right person.
Yeah, this Elrich built his career by being on the far left and building up an anti business reputation. Good enough for council but not moderate enough for county exec
Yeah - all of the business owners are anti Elrich because they are afraid of a $15 minimum wage. It’s that simple. Businesses will always be here because there’s a lot of money here, they just want more for themselves. Too bad - buck up!! Even amazon is bowing to political pressure and is offering their lowest level workers higher wages. You shouldn’t be working full time and still need food stamps , utility assistance and Medicaid. That’s called businesses living off the dole!
No, a $15 minimum wage was Elrich kow-towing to unions. It's not good for business or for the people of MoCo. The low-skilled jobs that can be moved to Frederick (which has lower minimum wage) will be moved there. Meanwhile, 20 year olds in MoCo will be unable to find entry-level jobs since their lack of skills means they aren't worth $15/hour, but would be worth $12/hr. If Elrich really wanted to help to ensure families earn a living wage, he would have just increased the existing Earned Income Tax Credit. That looks at family size and total family income, and gives a credit if you don't earn enough. Instead, now we'll see people with good full-time jobs during the week earning $15/hour for their weekend holiday job at Macy's to earn spending money for Christmas. This isn't helping the working poor.
You go ahead and take the low skill work to Frederick -why not?? The cost of living and the taxes are lower in Frederick so that would make a lot of sense. Hell - many of our jobs are now overseas (using child labor but I digress) or they’ve moved to Arkansas (Duggar labor) because it’s cheaper. Are we suffering here because our clothes or the endless plastic junk we buy isn’t being manufactured here? I don’t think so. Who lives in MoCo earning $11.50hour? What would remain here are service jobs - life guarding, landscaping , food industry (handing out donuts, fast food, bakery), retail. You won’t be hurting to find workers that’s for sure. What 20 somethings do those jobs? Mine did an entry level job in DC as a 17& 18 year old and got $15/hour and saved 6k towards college which is significant. Previously kids lifeguarded for $11/hour but clubs could pay more (the owners of our dumpy pool drives a fancy ass bmw & has a very nice house). Even 20 somethings need actual money for things. If my 20 something was still working a minimum wage job I’d be pleased if their earning $15/hour would mean that they could move out of my house but I don’t think that they could on that salary. But they are getting closer perhaps and those that work 2-3 of those type of jobs might have some extra money on hand for exciting things like dental work or a fast food mean - wee-haw!!
