Had just one, and later a miscarriage. My one was a complicated, challenging child and it might have been difficult raising a second with the challenges he had those years.  But what I sometimes brood about (not to him) is the fact that when I am gone (his father has already passed) there won't be anyone for him to remember being a kid in our family with (like I do with my siblings). We have known a very large family (8 kids) since he was around 10. Sometimes when I feel maudlin I imagine going to some of those kids (now adults) and begging them to remain his siblings when I'm gone or demented. We've had Thanksgiving with that family the past several years so maybe this year I will drink a lot of wine and let myself really be completely maudlin.

My memories of siblings are not necessarily sweet--our family had a lot of its own challenges and conflicts--and yet they are part of my identity. We fought a lot but we also created a lot of adventures for ourselves, and that was cool.

I just think it is a great blessing to know people who knew you when you were a kid. [/quote]
