There is the mystery of the woman's name listed in John's trust that even she didn't know. My guess is that John the corporate shark hurt someone, intentionally or unintentionally, couldn't live with the guilt and is leaving that person money to atone. It would also explain why, if he did in fact know about his wife and bff's affair, it was not of primary importance to him in the scheme of things.
