That’s a wealth of information. Thank you. What about my high schooler (to be in two weeks) prospects to Chantilly High School admission? If we look for home in the above zip codes (& communities) will she get admitted straight into Chantilly High School? We are moving from DE. Thanks in advance!
Yes. Chantilly is a base HS. If you move into a Chantilly zoned home, your child will immediately start at Chantilly. And AAP stops in high school, with open enrollment Honors and AP. So, she will not have an issue registering classes. Freshmen take: English (honors or not) World History (Honors or not) ——> there is an option for an Honors English/Honors WH integrated block that prepares you for 10th grade WH Math (Honors or not— most kids are Geometry or Algebra II) Biology (Honors or not) Health and PE Foreign language (Chantilly offer French, Latin, Spanish and German, no honors language option) Elective Slot: BEWARE— new requirement this year in VA that entering freshmen take two consecutive years of electives (which sucks IMO). So your kid needs to be aware that if they take Art, Band, Orchestra, etc., they are stuck for two years or have to restart the clock. Ugghh! The school will caution against taking all core honors classes. But lots of kids coming into Chantilly from Carson and RRMS with all AAP classes in very strong MSs. The strong students will take all honors, despite what the school says. Welcome! I put 2 kids through Oak Hill and Carson, and loved both schools. The oldest is a rising senior at TJ and the youngest is getting ready to start Chantilly as a freshman this fall. We have been very impressed with Chantilly, which has a great reputation among our neighbors and DC2’s friends’ older siblings and their parents. A lot of nice, down to earth hard working kids with nice, down to earth parents. A significant subset of kids who are very focused on academics and who are members of academic teams (debate, FIRST robotics, science Olympiad, etc), and DC2 has a posse of very nice friends who proudly call themselves nerds and wear t-shirts from science camp and making science puns and references. It’s a big school, so this is by no means the only type of kid or the only social scene. But if it’s what your DC is looking, it definately exists.
