MD schools have slid in rankings every year since Hogan became Governor. He needs to be asked about this in EVERY interview and debate. What's he doing to stem the slide? And why did the slide start with his election?
That's a great question for the MoCo Board of Education candidates. Other than the school calendar thing, the state doesn't have that much control over curriculum -- the county does. MCPS (MoCo) implemented their disastrous Curriculum 2.0, that's been a massive failure, and they haven't even figured out a way to dig out of the hole: https://bethesdamagazine.com/Bethesda-Beat/2018/MCPS-Pauses-Search-for-New-Curriculum-After-Learning-Staff-Members-Are-Taking-Jobs-with-Vendor/ You can point to education funding, but a lot of that comes from the county budget, and more spending per student doesn't necessarily mean better outcomes. DCPS spends more per student than MCPS, with worse outcomes (yes, I realize this is a complex issue.. point is that just throwing money at the problem doesn't necessarily make it better). I vote heavily Dem but I voted for Hogan because he has common sense approaches that are fiscally responsible. The Labor Day school year thing was great in that it improved tax revenues (more spending in Ocean City) while not really costing anything to implement. Yes, people can complain that one additional week of vacation causes kids to forget more, but I dont' think it's a huge difference if they're gone for 9 weeks or 10 weeks. Concerned parents can always sit with their kids and study during summer break if it's a big issue. Same with his transporation priorities. Under Hogan, he's green-lighted the Purple Line which we desperately need -- there's no other easy public transit connection between Bethesda and Silver Spring, which are some of the largest jurisdictions in MoCo, and we can't just add more roads, because it's too built-up and no space beside East-West Highway. Then for places where we _do_ need the roads, he's moving forward on it, like plans to add toll lanes to 270 and 495 -- just like they have in VA. He's also lowered tolls across the board in MD, and dropped the stupid monthly "maintenance fee" to have an EZPass (VA doesn't have one, why does MD need one?) even if you don't use it. He'll be getting my vote again. Jealous has interesting ideas but no way to pay for them. We already face some of the highest taxes in the nation, particularly in MoCo where we're at the charter limit. We need to work better with the money we have, not be forced to raise taxes further.
