However this ends (and I also would be dismayed by an Elrich win) . . . I think primary election rules should change. It's ridiculous not to have a run off in this situation. Top 2 or 3 vote getters. The ballot this year was simply overwhelming. Also, for the races where you vote for more than 1 and there were umpteen candidates, I think it should either be ranked voting, or also a run off for top 6/8.
+1. Also if these assholes are using taxpayer funds for their campaigning, primaries should be open to ALL since that is effectively the election in MoCo.
Why not just register in the party?
Because not everyone wants to be affiliated with a party. I’m a registered Dem but DH is moderate and unaffiliated- he tends to lean more Dem in general elections but it’s partly because in his words, the Republicans “just don’t give me anyone decent to vote for.” Although he’ll probably vote for Hogan because he’s suspicious of anyone who promises a lot of free stuff without a viable way to pay for it. And as a commuter who has to drive he likes that Hogan is at least addressing congestion and road improvements. That being said, the political reality is that in a county like this you don’t have much of a voice if you’re not registered with the dominant party. When I gave him descriptions of the country exec candidates he liked Blair and Frick (and not Elrich) like I suspected he would. But I couldnt convince him to register. He was already sick of the canvassers coming to visit me and all the junk mail, so that would have been doubled.
