In India, nearly all legal documents have a box for "third gender" and it has been this way for a long time-- over 20 years.  That's a lot more than we have here.  Transgender people can also label themselves to whichever sex they identify with without any gender change surgery.

Several states offer welfare benefits, free housing, pension plans and free sex reassignment surgery to transgender individuals.

Gay Pride parades have been going on for 10 years-- there are some European countries that still do not allow them.

There have been transgender mayors and MPs since early 2000s.

A 2017 poll showed that nearly 60% of Indians are in favor of same-sex marriage legislation, not bad for out of a billion people.

Every law against the rights of gay people in India came from invaders that believed homosexuality is a sin.  Portuguese (Catholic), Mughals (Muslims) and during British Raj (Christian and Catholic) and their biggest fault is for keeping them on the books since their Independence but as the colonized minded generations are aging and dying out I hope this changes.  Though, the percentage of those of Abrahamic religions is increasing so we'll see how it goes.

As far as gay in Bollywood goes-- there have been several good movies with good storylines around gay characters and they even have a dedicated gay film festival that's been going on every year since 2010

Yes, there are homophobic people in every country and culture in the world and LGBTQ have it harder there (and here and everywhere) but to state that it's "intense" in India (as opposed to here? Saudi Arabia?), not so much. It's a hard road with lots of work needed but no one is getting a legally sanctioned stoning to death for it.

Relax dude. I didn’t say that the homophobia there was any worse than here and the fact that she is continuing to beard here would suggest that it’s an issue both places. Also there’s a difference between being a big star and being able to participate in one film festival....[/quote]
