They should have a week to sign up and then a lottery if there are more applicants than spots. That would be fair.
I disagree. Anyone in for this school year should be able to automatically roll into next year. Then siblings not currently enrolled should be able to register. And then they should open registration to everyone else.
I don't agree with this. It would be great for me but that would mean anyone who didn't get in one year is then penalized in perpetuity. The issue is this, late the system is not prepared to handle the load. They need to stagger registration over the month of April. Registration for 25% of the schools opens each Monday of the month. I am sure 90% of people register during week 1, if not on day 1. So any stragglers should not have much impact on the set of schools starting the next week.
There are not hordes of people NOT getting into extended day!!! I still fail to see what all the hysteria is about. People move in and out of the county during the year. People's employment status changes. Kids come and go from extended day and everyone survives. And I guarantee that if having your child attend extended day is the difference between you earning a paycheck or not, they will find a way to fit you in. However, it is not the only option for many Arlington families, it's just the most convenient one.
So why do you need to be rolled in automatically if it's so easy to get in each year?
