Stocks, bonds, gold, etc. Real estate is usually a safer investment, hedge against inflation and great tax shelter on gains - DC is an expensive place to start however. Buy a starter home with some land under it. It will make you 'lucky financially' and keep a roof over your head. If you don't invest well your children may have to take care of you in your old age.
