I'm touched you all included Reed College in this list, but realistically, it's to the left of Oberlin on social justice... so... Not really preppy. Great for grad school admissions--not so much for jobs or networking.
In terms of academic intensity, Reed might be with Swarthmore. Socially, the feeling I get with Reed and Oberlin is they are left libertarians and you might be able to tell that from the way they dress, coming to class in PJs, no shoes. Go to Santa Monica, Cali and you'll see many of these types. What you don't know is that many you thought homeless might actually be millionaires. You just can't see from their dress and the way they act. These types, including Reed and Oberlin students, typically care less about others' social status, money, etc. Preppy colleges kids typically do and their dress and behavior show that. I doubt, however, Reed and Oberlin students come from lower income strata than those at Swarthmore, Amherst, Williams, Bowdoin, Vassar.
