Just one more thought. Think that a real downside was losing out in making stronger connections with acquaintances who I could actually see becoming friends with both my husband and me. The wife of one couple, for example, doesn't drink and I think my getting drunk perhaps makes her think twice about getting together at other social eventa. Has any of you cut off friends because they got sloppy drunk?
I don't drink due to alcoholism in my family. I wouldn't cut off a friend because they drink - we have some good friends who I think are active alcoholics. I know and they know they're not going to quit drinking so I don't try to convince them of that. But if I saw an acquaintance drinking too much, I would be reluctant to seek them out as a closer friend. I would figure we just don't socialize the same way - I'm willing to hang with heavy drinkers now and then because they're already my friends but I wouldn't seek out new heavy drinkers for friendship. It's not a judgment thing - it's just that I don't get to drink (and I would like to) so I don't want to hang with people who do that a lot. But if this is a one-time event, OP, I would probably change my mind about hanging with you.
