I'd ask if they heard about it, are kids talking about it, do they know the accused in any way, do they ever feel uncomfortable about teachers or coaches or staff or kids at school and do they know they can always come and talk to me about anything..... The answers surprise me.

When the incident happened at Rockville, I asked my DD if she knew any girls at Rockville and how they were feeling.  Turns out lots of girls feel creeped out and unsafe at school (of course), and the Rockville incident reminds them all how vulnerable they are no matter where they go to school.  Asking also opened up a conversation about peer on peer date rape at our school.  DD has friends who have been sexually assaulted, and are struggling emotionally.  And then there's the impact of seeing a peer come forward with accusations of rape and basically nothing happening to the accused and the victim being painted as a slut. So, even though the Rockville incident didn't happen at our school, it has a huge impact on DD.  Turns out there is a HS grapevine, and DD also knows about other assaults and how they were handled at other schools.  All total during HS, DD had 2 teacher sexual incidents at her school, knows of 2 rapes at least, knows about at least 2 other incidents at other schools plus the Rockville thing.

I'm glad I asked.  I had no idea how much DD was exposed to.
