Fair enough. There have been some really good responses.  I think I was turned off by the OP's implication that parents aren't already involved, and the quick response that "you can't change students."  I'm not sure if both those were posted by trolls, but I, rightly or wrongly, assigned some measure of racism or self-loathing into it.  After a re-read, I can see that maybe the OP really is looking for a discussion on solutions. [/quote]
