We can ask that registration be required, or we can just go do it. Nothing stopping anyone (except that I just tried and received a Site Administrator Error??)
This highlights one of the issues. The registration system doesn't always work correctly. People forget their passwords and usernames. They change their email address and can't get password reminders. Then they demand that we remove all of the posts linked to their username. It is often a resource challenge to manage the few registered users that we have.
Got it. I would like to register -- the more of us who do, the smaller the pool of potential trolls who can get away with looking like everyone else. Jeff, please let us know when the registration feature is fixed and I would encourage others to register.
You'll be in the minority of people who register. I come to DCUM because I can post freely without worry that my post history can be tracked back to me and my identity found out. Even if Jeff fixes the registration issue, you'll be one of a handful who register. While I self identify on certain posts, I like that it's up to me to do so. I also don't think it'll make the pool of trolls smaller. Trolls register on plenty of other forums and go wild with their trolling. So they'll do the same here on DCUM. I say keep the site as-is and just block the OP of this thread.
I've got to say, even knowing that Jeff can track all my posts (lord, so many posts) is an inhibitor. I come on here when I am procrastinating on work, which is a lot, or when I have a real question, which is less often. I don't think it would be difficult to figure out who I really am based on my IP address and the things I've posted. TL;DR: As a reader, I'd prefer people to register. As a contributor, I like things as they are. Though it might be fun to develop rapport between posters, I suppose. See what this is like as an actual community, v an unknowably large anon board.
