We start GFCF for our son who was diagnosed with ASD 2 weeks ago. Keep our fingers crossed. We keep our hope up since many parents testified that it helps with their kids. GFCF might not work with all kids with autism tho. Our son had lot of pediasure as recommended by his ped. Not sure this is one of reasons?. He was able to say few words before, now none, only making sound at 3 yrs old. For parents who is doing GFCF, it's not hard if you look from Asian diet perspective. Most Asians eat rice-based stuff and non-diary stuff all their lives. They are fine and pretty smart. Food are easy to cook and cheap. So I am cooking Asian style food. Taking my son off completely diary and wheat-based products. I keep sugar level to minimum, hopefully to reduce to zero soon. As for calcium source, I give him almond milk with chocolate flavor (which keeps the milk sweet enough for him, given that pediasure is super sweet). He loves it. (I tried rice milk, coconut milk...but he seems like almond milk most. So give your kids few options to try figure out what they like. I bake cake for my son without using sugar, only using GF cornbread flour/almond flour + banana + coconut cream +olive oil => very tasty. My son loves it so much. (you can change flavor with different fruits/carrots/zucchini , but thick texture recommended like prune, apple, raisin ...) I make pasta made from brown rice + pureed veggie + tomato sauce => he loves it Learn to cook noodle soups from internet , quite easy with chicken broth + veggie + meats+ rice noodles. All rice noodle has good instructions how to cook/boil them. My son starts loving eating rice noodle. I don't think he misses his pasta or spaghetti. In addition, kids love rice (jasmine rice or sticky/sweet rice are the best) No need to go crazy with GFCF products in wholefood stores which might be commercial and expensive. For snack: he loves all organic fruits apple sauce things + GF pretzets + GF cookies + rice crackers (cookies are most expensive item) All these products you can get from trader joe which is more reasonable than wholefood. Just share with you some of my experience. I am looking into supplements for him like fish oil etc. Appreciate any recommendation of DAN in MD/DC or brand. Thanks!
Why not get your child tested for gluten and other vitamin deficiencies before going to extreme diets? If your child reacts to a specific food, its a medical/food issue, not part of a language delay or autism.
