I am 100000000% pro choice and hate Trump. But- this is something that bothers me when people who keep saying if Trump gets elected the world will end for women. First of all, the sinister strategy of GOP was to convert this into a states rights issue. Do you all get that it's not the federal level that's making abortion illegal? SCOTUS is giving back powers to states to decide for themselves and GOP States are those making abortion illegal. Biden cannot change this on his own. And actually Trump has said he isn't actually as nuts as some of his right wing friends. He is an egomaniac moron but I don't think he actually cares about this issue as a practical issue goes - it's a right wing evangelical bible thumping conservative platform. Secondly, it's a SCOTUS thing. I get if a GOP admin comes in there will be SCOTUS appt that will not bode well for pro choice but you have to look at the health of all on the Court. Is 2024-28 going to see a Justice on the way out or can we wait until 2028 when we may lose 1 or more to retirement or health? That may be a more critical time to elect a progressive? Lastly, where it's important to drive the vote for a Dem is at the state level. GOP had a pretty successful strategy of making sure they had the power at state level to legislatively push their agenda through. My prob with Dems is they get really passionate and want to do these big things passionately. All good except GOP manages things with a bit more detail and they are winning on this issue because they put a lot of thought into how to turn the tide in their favor. It's not about getting mad and passionate - it's about using brains to come up with a way of keeping choice for all. I wish Dems would be a bit smarter and look at the details. I'm not suggesting electing Trump is helping the cause of Choice but I'm just saying screaming about how Trump is gonna do more damage isn't completely accurate.
This is such a breathtakingly stupid take I don’t know where to begin. Aside from being ignorant of all the different ways republicans are planning to enact FEDERAL ABORTION BANS… Aside from that : THOMAS AND ALITO WILL RETIRE IF TRUMP IS ELECTED. TRUMP WILL SEAT AT LEAST 2 MORE JUSTICES. I don’t know how to make this more clear to you. They are 75, and 74. Their wealthy benefactors will make it worth their time ( not to mention they are both RWNJ ideologues) They politicized, corrupt, and ready to retire. They will have $$$$ speaking gigs lined up.
I think that PP is petrified by fear. She wouldn’t be the first person to freeze in the face of disaster.
Or one of the "they will never overthrow RvW" liars.
I think a lot of people had entrenched beliefs about where abortion was as an issue. For forty years the forced birthers chipped away at it, but the strongest attacks on women’s rights to bodily autonomy were always rebuffed and people assumed that was the detente. What I can’t figure out is how Roe has been gone for less than two years and people are still trying to pretend that the forced birther misogynists are just going to let women exist. Nope. This is their last chance.
Is the water getting warm in here?
It is simmering. For what little it’s worth, I really do think voters are going to rebuff this at the polls. Not nearly to the extent that they would if the corporate media were doing their job, but I don’t think the GOP is going to win. And what makes the GOP quake in fear is for there to be a George Floyd of abortion, someone whose death captures the attention of millions and manages to focus a bright beam on the morally bankrupt GOP.
DP. Similar to what happened with Savita Halapannavar in Ireland, yes. I wonder if that hasn't already happened here in the US, but no one has taken notice enough to make a stink about it to the media. I know there have been many close calls. At some point, someone is going to die, and that person will be of the "proper" demographic with a sufficiently outraged, financially capable family to make it a nationwide issue. I hate that it will likely need to come to that point, though. Such waste.
I would bet that, across the country, dozens to hundreds of women have died because of this and thousands have probably had their health and fertility permanently damaged. But the bulk of those women are probably minorities, probably mostly poorer, and as we know with missing blonde girls, only certain victims make the front pages. The families of women killed by these murderous forced birther policies have probably been approached to go public, but the threat of violence by right wing crazies remains a deterrent. But if the wrong woman dies and attracts attention - a Salvita Halapannavar or a(nother) Gerri Santoro - the GOP will finally go down in flames for good.
Let's hope it doesn't come to this.
