FCPS offers a fantastic education that is the envy of many communities across the country. The school year calendar is not hurting it. Kids of all ages work hard in school and deserve the breaks. The holidays are more difficult for parents of elementary school kids, but the calendar is released well in advance. Plan ahead for childcare. It doesn't have to be expensive. Get together with neighbors and friends to create a babysitter-share. Many high schoolers are happy to babysit for a little bit of extra cash. The holidays are a gift to the middle schoolers and high schoolers, who can stay home alone and catch up on studying, projects, research papers, sleep, relax, or babysit the younger kids.
Do you still have kids IN FCPS?? Kids want breaks, but they also need a continuous, constant schedule for education. I am not a year-round person, but the school year calendar should not be nearly 10 months long to accommodate each and every break this school board seems willing to accommodate. This school calendar simply has not delivered any consistency, especially not in the 5-day week category. We joke at my house, "It's a 5 day week? How are we going to survive???" Kids need to be in school, period. Over the 17 years we have been in FCPS, the calendar has become worse and worse. Earlier start dates, later last days of school. There has to be a healthy balance, and what we have is not it. Having the majority of 5-day weeks after Spring Break occurs at a time when kids (and frankly faculty and staff) are checked out. No one is locked in from Mid May to Mid June. And especially not after Memorial Day.
+1
