Went out to a nice drinks and dinner this weekend for our anniversary. We have two young kids and this was our first nice date in probably two years. Both places charged 22% auto gratuity. The restaurant has a Michelin star. So yeah, this is the default moving forward at nicer spots. Once you add in tax, you need to add about 30% to any price you see on the menu. 22% gratuity on alcohol is ridiculous.
These are once in a while events, if you can afford them now, you probably can afford to pay a bit more. Going out to eat in general is not necessity of basic need. Once restaurants hike up prices and slap you with a bunch of fees and extra tips people just stop coming and they go out of business. Naturally, at some point insanity will stop and there is a ceiling to any increase especially if the service/product is not basic necessity. Number of people with loads of disposable income is limited. One day greedy businesses run out of customers.
