I don't think there is a recovery from a C-section in Gilead -- at least for a handmaid.  If you need a C-section, I think they do it old school -- just cut to save the baby and leave you to bleed out.  I don't think they'd think a post-c-section haidmaid is worth much.  Curious about what kind of medical care the econo-wives get, though -- or the wives of commanders.  I get the sense that medical care is sparse even for the upper class, and probably even more so with the sanctions and such by other countries.  Part of the backstory that we don't really have is what happened to all the scientists and pre-existing scientific infrastructure.  I'm sure a lot of scientists were killed, but did they save some that knew how to make antibiotics, for instance?  Or insulin?  Or asthma medication?  Or even allergy medication? It probably depends on who you are but yes, they let them die.  Bizarre they don't put more attention into IVF and medical care when their goal is babies.  They'd rather a baby die than get a good doctor.  They might help the handmaiden as they need her to reproduce more.[/quote]
