Ideal situation is to have Russians tied up and bleed and burned slowly for years in Ukraine.

That is the IC view - Atleast with some I know.

I personally understand the logic — I dunno if I trust us policymakers to strike that fine line in managing this conflict at just the right temperature

The heritage west (5 eyes, France, etc) while more affected about ukrainian deaths than brown people deaths in Middle East/Afghanistan, are not really as truly affected by Slavic people beating up each other as there is an instinctive divide between Slavs and people west of Berlin.

if your goal hurting Russia as much as possible but not wanting to get into a conventional hot confrontation with them, prolonging this conflict is a god send to you

Imagine if Russia or China could gin up reasons for us to have to go into Mexico militarily
