This thread is an example of how awful, uncivil, judgmental our society has become. How hard is it to just ignore and/or move on? I've loads of people whose "identity" is closely intertwined with some hobby, activity, belief, etc. Many times those are fleeting (like my few Triathlon friends, who have since abandoned that). Sometimes it's not (looking at a few of my friends who are WAY to involved in their kids' lives). But, in any event, I smile, listen for a few min., then extricate myself and move on. Even if I roll my eyes to myself, the harsh observations and judgments of many on this thread are really, just pretty gross. These are the people in my community? That's really horrifying to realize that y'all are going around like this.
There is a line. Some people cross it. I am the one who wrote the post on this page about dog people, and I wrote it specifically because I have a neighbor like this whose dog is constantly barking at me or trying to jump up on me ("he's friendly!") when I pass them on the sidewalk. The neighbor frequently lets this dog off leash on the street and in our nearby park (which is NOT a dog park and where there are lots of signs stating that leashes are required). Recently this neighbor took to leaving those little bags of dog poop from their walks on the curb in front of their house. I noticed two bags one day when coming home and texted the neighbor "Hey, just so you know, there are a couple bags of I think dog poop in front of your house -- not sure if they are yours or not but wanted to make you aware." The response "Yes I know. I prefer to dispose of them at the end of the day. I will get to them tonight." Um, no. I explained that leaving dog poop on public property actually violates city code and can carry a hefty fine ($300, I looked it up) and this guy immediately asked me if I was threatening him and got belligerent. Next day, there were three bags of dog poop on the curb. I am contemplating whether I want to escalate and report him to city services. I would prefer not to because I think that's aggressive, but his behavior is so horrible and anti-social that I feel I have little other recourse. I think this is the kind of thing a lot of people in this thread are talking about. I don't dislike dogs generally, and I know lots of people who are great and have dogs or love dogs. But there are people who go in so hard on one aspect of their personality to the exclusion of everything else (including being a good neighbor or having manners or social graces) and it sucks. I don't think this thread is about judging people for liking things or having passions. I think it's about people who cross the line.
