I don't think that too many Asian families would have a problem with admitting more Black and Hispanic students - assuming that it was due to doing a better job of identifying and enticing talented URMs.  On the other hand, if it's simply because the school system suddenly decides to play with the numbers because there are "too many Asians," a lot of people would have a problem with that.  You don't have to be Asian for that to bother you.[/quote]

Well, start by not calling the majority Asian student body toxic and insinuating that they cheated to get in.  "Pay to Play" is a racist dog whistle.  The racism toward Asians during this process has also been atrocious.  The school board and education officials should know better than to say those things.  It normalizes racism toward Asians.  They deserve the flak that they got.[/quote]

Here's a couple of serious questions, though...

TJ's environment has ALWAYS been problematic with respect to an unhealthy focus on college admissions and comparison between students. That toxicity has existed within TJ's community LONG before TJ became a majority- or even plurality-Asian school. How do we talk about solving that serious problem - which is a direct function of a flawed admissions process - without it turning into a referendum on Asian students and families?

There isn't anyone reasonable or important who has suggested that Asian families "cheated" in order to get in. There is anecdotal evidence from TJ students that suggests that there were test-prep companies who had inappropriate (but not illegal, so for heaven's sake stop with the calls for an investigation) access to exam materials that they then used to extract millions of dollars from families in order to enhance the Admissions' Office's perception of their children's abilities. [b]It's not cheating to do this, [/b]but the existence and success of these very expensive prep companies is evidence of a deeply flawed admissions process that allowed parental resources to have a significant and direct impact on admissions outcomes.

That's not a reason to go after those families or those companies, but it absolutely IS a reason to go after the admissions process that allowed for it. FCPS unsuccessfully went after it in 2001 when the school was overwhelmingly white, and they went after it again here with a more favorable school board. The inartful manner in which the School Board messaged their work on this issue doesn't make the work any less important or valid.[/quote]
