That Grassley thought he would be presiding is a two option thing. 1) Pence didn’t want to hurt Trump, his “friend.” (No, literally, that’s what Pence was thinking. It’s in the article.) 2) the USSS was going to do away with Pence, either temporarily or permanently. Pence’s spider senses were tingling and that’s why he refused to get into the car with USSS agents who were not his regular agents.

So much violence was on the table that day.

Pence comes off like a total goober who was almost willing to go along with the whole coup. Almost. I mean Dan Quayle had to talk sense into him (which is not in the article) but Pence was still willing to believe Trump’s lies as late as late December. Pence did the right thing, but just barely.
