Your #4 is the most likely. No one should resign. They need to stay there and refuse unlawful orders. No coup-we do not want a military coup unless things are really really really bad. Those never work out.[/quote]

I don't think that's a fair read in the circumstance.  These people are military lifers.  They ARE the military -- they have been there sustaining and building the institution long before Trump showed up.  They should stay--and we should want them to stay--until they are asked to do something illegal.

If they leave, they'll be replaced by toadies and there will be little hope of repair anytime in the foreseeable future.  We will have ceded the military to real "enemy within."[/quote]
