Really? I “work” for 10 months? How about the time I spend all summer planning, taking classes, planning, planning, and then planning some more. I work 13 months a year. Not complaining, simply explaining. D. Goldfarb Banneker AJS
Another teacher here. I also spent most of my summer planning and taking classes. I’m actually taking a break right now from yet another class, trying to get it done before the students arrive. There’s a major misconception about summers. For many of us, it just means a more casual workday during which we can visit the bathroom when we want. I won’t claim I’ve worked 40 hour weeks, it 20-30 hours a week (without pay) is accurate.
I am another teacher and respect that you do this. But all of the teachers I know take most of the summer off and are not working. A few do summer school. Otherwise they are not working 20-30 hours a week.
That’s your anecdote but I am also a teacher and all the ones I know plan for next year, do summer school, or a camp. Many do work if they actually want to ever afford to not have to rent.
Fine. I was countering the fact that someone said “most of us” plan during the summer in reference to teachers. My anecdote is just as valid as yours. And most teachers do not plan 20-30 hours a week over the summer.
DP. And from my experience (my circle of teachers), most of us do. Perhaps it’s based on grade level or type of teacher. I’m high school and I teach courses that require additional recertification. I also am responsible for my own curriculum to a greater degree.
What classes do you teach that require recertification?
