Acceptance rate doesn't affect USNews ranking.

However I care. 
50% acceptance rate means 1 out of 2 can easily walk in. That affects quality of the student body a lot.
I want my smart kid surrounded by other smart kids. 
 It's very important.  
It determines the level of classes and students learn from other students a lot.

I know what an acceptance rate is. I think your smart child can find smart people at many more places than you consider however. I went to a top college, and boy, for being the "smartest" people in the collegiate space, there sure were a bunch of dummies around. Your kid ultimately will decide who they hang out with.[/quote]

It's not just about choong who to hang out.
You don't choose who are in the classes. 
Of course top schools have some dummies and lower tier schools have some smart kids, but you are likely to be surrounded by more smart kids at top schools.  I would stay away from a school one every other kid can walk in.
