I would love to see a Virginia public school allstar game between public and privates.
The first step is for the top Virginia publics and top area private schools to play each other in the spring. GC, SR, PVI and SASS should put Oakton, Broadneck and Dominion on their lists. Coaches are planning their schedules now and should make this happen. There’s ample time and room on the schedules for this to happen. Why these teams don’t compete when they are so close makes zero sense. Outcomes of those games would give the Washington Post the best data upon which to base its rankings.
The all-star game would not be close. As for scheduling games, Oakton played and beat SSAS last year which was significant. Madison played SSAS the last several years, STAB in '22, and Potomac last season. Not sure about the other publics, but I believe the privates would be willing to schedule teams that can give them a competitive game. The fact is that there aren't that many publics that can compete with the top tier privates, and there is a great degree of variability based on the year. Just look at the VHSL 6A State Champions the past 15 years. Hard to sustain excellence in a program with a public pyramid as you are geographically-locked and dependent on rec coaches (generally dads and moms)--even with really good coaching, and we all know that is uneven.
The top ten rankings have been established and according to the Washington Post represent the area’s best. They should play each other to determine if they are truly accurate.
Would be fun and interesting, but not logistically feasible, with existing schedules, playoffs, and school calendars for the publics' and privates' respective leagues.
