Any chance at Murch for PreK 4 #14? (OOB)
Murch isn't adding another PK4 class next year even with the move back to renovated building. With the same three PK4 classes this year, there were 10 inbounds kids and three OOB w/sibling who didn't get off the waitlist, numbers similar to previous years. Not looking good.
With more space, Murch should have four or five Prek3 & 4 and kindergarten classes.
So easy to say that, so hard to actually pull off, for abundant reasons. First, it would require hiring new teachers and support staff, and DCPS in no way wants to be seen spending oodles of money on a W3 school, especially in the wake of a renovation. Second, it would cause a ripple effect down the line at Deal and Wilson, two schools facing a huge space crunch in coming years (if they're not already there). And the new Murch isn't being built to hold a massive influx of new students, anyway. It's being right-sized (probably 15 years too late) to hold the students who live in the neighborhood. The old building also was so dilapidated that -- combined with being massively overcrowded -- it was a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Murch is adding a fifth kindergarten class for next year, according to a newsletter the principal just sent out. They're bringing over someone who was a partner teacher at Mann. Interesting.
It's not that they are adding one, they are getting one back. There wasn't room for the usual 5 classes of kids in swing space. Before the move to swing space there were 5 sections in K-3, and the building is designed to return to that.
