So, yesterday Biden actually claimed that the sanctions the US was threatening Russia with were not intended as a deterrent. WHAT? He is gaslighting the American people. [twitter]https://twitter.com/GOP/status/1507180720816590854[/twitter]
If they were deterrent, they would have been imposed before the invasion.
....Which many Republicans were calling for. But, no. This administration (and many on this site) argued that until Russia actually did something, the sanctions could not be imposed. And, the video montage above shows that this administration WAS threatening sanctions to deter Russia - completely contrary to what Biden claimed yesterday. Maybe someone should play all those clips for Biden and see what he has to say that they never claimed sanctions were a deterrent.
Meh, who cares? You’re splitting hairs. We didn’t impose sanctions ahead of time because it would’ve muddied the message that Russia was the aggressor. If we impose sanctions first, Russia starts hammering the “victim” narrative and uses sanctions as a pretext for war. This would’ve undermined the United front across Europe against Russia. So yeah, I’m glad we didn’t impose sanctions first. Russia is clearly the criminal.
This is the biggest crock of crap. This just proves that the Biden administration is reactive and not proactive. They are, and always have been, allowing Putin to call the shots. They have been playing defense all along. It shows weakness. And, they still are. I think Zelensky and the Ukrainians are the only ones who truly believe they can win this fight. Reports are that Biden is encouraging Zelensky to settle for a deal with Russia - essentially allowing Russia to get away with what they have done. Huge mistake. The NATO leaders went to Brussels...with the photo ops and the speeches and the regular fanfare - for an EMERGENCY meeting. But, they didn't act like there was anything urgent in their meeting. People are dying. Ukrainians are losing their homes, their livelihoods, and their lives as our world leaders wait to see what Putin's next move will be. Time to stop telling Putin what we WON'T do and start having him guess what we will do. So far, Zelensky is the only leader who has shown any strength.
No, it isnt. For example, the threat of jail time or a fine is meant to deter crime. It doesn't prevent it. Imposing a punishment before the bad act occurs is idiotic. It would have fed right into the Russian victimization bs and wouldnt have gotten nordstream2 closed or the SWIFT ban imposed. The coordinated united front with the EU and Japan has been our biggest advantage. The self-inflected rhetorical wounds from Russia, nuclear threats etc, have benefited us. When one has a bumbling bullying preening idiot as an adversary then get out of the way and let the fool injure themself. Don't give them an artificial foil. It's the same strategy Biden had against Trump in the election.
