You will not be liable for what is a genuine mistake. Let's work together to PREVENT mistakes and then we talk about how (double checking everything, even if it seems silly, etc.) But we would NOT allow a doctor to let a resident operate, and stand there while the resident was doing something tricky they clearly weren't ready for.
