[quote=Anonymous]Agree. It has gotten absurd. We need influential black leaders to publically explain to these kids that their tactics and some of their more extreme demands probably will not accelerate progress on legitimate ones. Protesting students think overreaching is a good strategy, and if universities respond that way they will get more absurd demands from all groups based on that success. Someone needs to stand up and say that setting a fixed percentage target for faculty diversity is a racist demand. Unless Phds are being granted at prestigious schools in all disciplines to students of various colors conducting original research in the same proportion that each group represents in the general population, why in the world would one think new faculty hiring would be in such percentages. And as in any other industry, some turnover only occurs when there are openings -- retirements. Many current liberal white students are all too caught up in wanting to appear "supportive" that they themselves are not stopping to think critically about what they are supporting. The best way to be an ally of underrepresenting minorities, is to be honest in saying "I agree, and will support this" and "I disagree, and cannot support that" for x reasons. The grown ups need to start acting as such, and that may require that they endure be accused of racism and insensitivity if they disagree with student demands. I don't know what goes on in admissions' offices, but personally I would be looking very carefully at applicants whose primary EC appears to be social justice warrior in training unless there is very concrete evidence in essays etc. to reveal how they really think about these issues.
