Opalite lyrics sounds like she's anti-black people. The onyx nights giving way to opalite. Travis had black girlfriends and now is with a white girl (after trying to snag a black star, Meghan The Stallion). That's how it reads to me.

I think onyx is Matty Healy: his eye color, hair, the black clothes he wears. It’s giving “cinephile in black and white.” Their relationship was intense and tumultuous, hence the lyric about her dancing through “lightning strikes” and being sleepless. Then came the calm blue skies, the opalite. It’s a reference to Travis’ eye color and birth stone. It’s a man-made stone and a metaphor for “man-made happiness,” in her words, whatever that means. It sounds like she is trying hard to convince everyone, herself included.

Yes, she seems super miserable lately. She should most certainly stay in her tortured era because “intensity” somehow means true love. Kidding, obviously. Taylor said it best, you’re starving until you’re not. Travis is the real deal. She feels the most herself. The album is a good listen start to finish. [/quote]
