You need to read your history books again.

Mao represented the “left” in China.  His revolution was fueled not by his “conservative” views, but his radical Communist agenda. It was the Students/Revolutionaries that took power from the seated government and took over China. It was his revolution that dismissed scientists and create communal farms.
