How connected are these schools to admissions offices at top colleges? Comparing this to how some top NYC pre-schools can broker their kids into TT privates. Does this exist at all?
It exists, but not to the extent it used to. I won't name the school, but the HOS at DC's TT NYC private told DH that sometimes he will make a phone call and go to bat for kids who may need a little extra boost to get into their schools of choice.
That happens at our non DMV (not NYC) private. It’s the sign of a good private school if your head of school is willing to make a phone call for the kid, especially after a deferral or waitlist.
Our non-TT NYC private got a kid off a top 10 WL. Counselor literally told my dc, “just a minute, I have to make this call to get this person in” and the next day kid was in.
This is a form of yield protection. The kid being on the WL is qualified for the top 10, now the school just wants commitment. And they have to do it this way (through school counselor) to get the kid withdraw from all other schools.
They can do this to private school kids, because their counselor has tight control on the kid's application. More difficult in public schools, where the counselor has much less control on what the kid can or cannot do.
not really. its a small class. they know what is the kids top choice. at our TT private CCO, they meet with the WL kids in mid to late April to get a "ranking" of all WL. And then work those WL. Its seen as a mark of failure if they can't get the kids off at least some of those WL. That's why its ranked by the kid.
"Tight control" means the kid cannot be off the list then end up going to a different school. What you said does not contradict mine. Of course the kid should have a preference among various WLs.
that still happens, though rarely. and only when kids stay on HYPSM lists through June.
