Has anyone heard the audio of the question? The words themselves seem fair enough, was there something in the tone that he used? I think you can appreciate the fact that Naomi is struggling right now, while also wondering what is so triggering about the same media that she used to her full advantage at last year’s US Open when she wore face masks with different names to bring attention to the inequalities in our justice system and relied on the media asking about them to get her point across. It’s really hard to understand the dichotomy here. She used the media expertly last year as a platform for things that are important to her, but now says her media obligations have damaged her mental health. I want to sympathize but I really have a lot of trouble understanding what is going on with her.
They need to limit questions to tennis. A reporter asking about her race/mental health about media/Haiti etc. inappropriate. She said she only gets media because of her race, ever since she was little. She said I’m here about tennis, yet he continued to ask a question not related to tennis.
So I would agree with this but for her activism about racial justice issues. You cannot shut down an entire tournament as a protest about racial inequality, wear face masks with the names of Black people who have been killed on court to your matches, and participate in glossy cover stories where you highlight your activism, and then say alright I only want to talk about tennis at my press conferences.
Yes. Actually you can. It’s a press conference on a game day. It’s for tennis. If you want to cover other subjects plan a presser on another day.
