Nothing was solved here. Schools are still overcrowded or now, possibly half empty. They should have made it an AI/Robotics/Engineering magnet school. They would have had a full school and it would have drawn from all the other schools - with no arguing. This is an epic disaster.
The SB and Reid have failed the schools. Having some schools between 75-85% capacity and others at over 105% when there is a new high school and plenty of space at other schools is irresponsible. Decimating schools like Westfield and South Lakes to ensure the rich constituents are taken care of is just plain wrong and goes against the principles of education. These schools will lose electives and teachers and continue on a downward spiral. These redistricting decisions are so blatantly classist and racist. Vote for a new SB folks.
Democrat here who hates how left the school board is. Your constant whining about classism and racism are what drives people straight into maga. Your views are not mainstream, even in the Democratic party. If you think FCPS is racist, Then frankly you likely believe that everyone in the world is racist. Just absurd.
DP. It’s so obvious when a poster like you is coming from a place of extreme privilege that you want to preserve at all costs. You really can’t understand that people at South Lakes and Westfield don’t want to see their schools gutted?
Neither Westfield or South Lakes is being "gutted." And, Skyview is not getting a school of "extreme privilege." It is going to be a good comprehensive school including all kinds of students. The kids in this area deserve a school that is in their community. If you are upset that they are leaving your community, you need to realize that some people don't like long bus rides to Westfield or IB at South Lakes.
No one said Skyview will be a school of “extreme privilege.” Try and keep up. It’s other schools that are being protected while South Lakes and Westfield will be left well under capacity.
South Lakes and Westfield have plenty of construction, they will fill up quicker than you think. SLHS will be at 85%, that is not gutted. No one would complain if Dogwood was moved to Skyview and not Fox Mill or Floris because the Dogwood students are FARMs students, their departure doesn’t hurt the test scores. It’s not about losing students, it’s about what students are leaving. The anger is that the schools that were moved against their wishes to boost SLHS test scores leaving. Maybe if the county had removed IB and replaced it with AP this wouldn’t be happening. And Herndon High would have more of its top students because there would not be an easy to pupil place, close by school to move to.
You're only using total population. SLHS total includes about 200 in a true special needs program isolated from the general student body so total gen ed is drops to about 75% not 85%. From a programming/staffing perspective, removing UMC Floris/Fox Mill will reduce the demand for higher level classes.
