I don't see why this is even a big deal. Dems have always led in terms of promoting women and minority candidates, but nominations are nothing like DEI as a policy (which btw I consider admirable in general). It is about attracting groups of voters.

Why did the elder Bush pick Thomas? Because his predecessor was Thurgood Marshall. When Brennan stepped down, Thomas was actually on the list, but was considered too inexperienced and--more importantly--it was expected Marshall would retire, which was just one year later.
