Being chronically ill with something bizarre (Ehler Danlos anyone) yet simultaneously constantly traveling/hiking
That's called Munchausen's! I have EDS and it's become a trendy self diagnosis lately. Which is really funny, because you can only be officially diagnosed with a blood test. I've seen a couple of them on tiktok and thought it was morbidly entertaining.
The most common form of EDS cannot be diagnosed with a blood test. For type 1 and type 2 the blood test misses about 50%. It is not easy to officially diagnose and most doctors miss it altogether.
While this is true, it's also what makes EDS a popular choice for people with Munchausen's or who would like to lie/exaggerate their health problems, because they can always self-diagnose and then claim that doctors missed it. It sucks because there are people who actually have it and they often get taken less seriously due to the people who claim to have it but are using it for sympathy seeking or because they have a mental health disorder. This is true of a number of diseases and medical problems. The people who self-diagnose and talk a lot about their "medical issues" but spend very little time talking to actual doctors and never seem to get real treatment do a disservice to everyone because I think it makes a lot of people suspicious of any diagnosis that isn't transparently obvious. Many of us know at least one person, if not more, who have clearly been either making up via self-diagnosis, or exaggerating the severity of one of these issues. It's a bummer.
