[/quote] They introduced his mom to show how much Ted has grown - he was finally able to confront his mom about why they had never talked about his dad's suicide, or worked through it together. The whole reason he is/was so relentlessly optimistic is because that's how she raised him - never showing sadness or asking for help. That's also why Michelle left him - because he could never just be real. He realized all of this in therapy. Loved her character, btw. Such a great episode.[/quote]
