Here you have the reason why the Democrats may cave: With hours to go before a midnight deadline for Congress to fund the government or shut it down, most Americans say avoiding a shutdown is more important than passing a bill to maintain the program allowing people brought to the US illegally as children to stay, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS. It is patently ridiculous to shut down the government with all of its ramifications just because the Democrats insist on amnesty for 800K DACA recipients who illegally entered the country! Repeat: they are in the country ILLEGALLY and yet, Democrats are willing to actually shut down the government? Insanity!! http://www.cnn.com/2018/01/19/politics/cnn-poll-shutdown-trump-immigration-daca/index.html
Democrats should drop the issue and focus on something more tangible to the majority of the US population. Cost of prescription drugs? Improved transportation infrastructure? Subsidized STEM degrees? Paying teachers more? Any takers?
I agree. Why not focus on an issue (or issues) that would benefit Americans? The ones you mention are excellent. I'd start with subsidizing STEM degrees, as our country is falling further and further behind other developed nations. And definitely - something needs to be some about prescription drug prices. But threatening to shut the government to better the lives of people brought here illegally (and who have already benefitted as a result) is just the wrong priority.
It makes me wonder... who is determining the strategies for the Democratic party? Do they actually know anyone who is an immigrant or Hispanic?
