I agree. I have written this before; US has been operating on honor systems for many highly placed government position for all this while. One unethical person who has no shame and is charismatic enough to create a cult has broken the system.

We've definitely been operating on the honor system, but I'd argue that we've had unethical, shameless, and (somewhat) charismatic people before who have tried to break the system. Look no further than Nixon. Only this time around, Democrats didn't have the numbers in Congress and Republicans put party over country and were too cowardly to hold Trump accountable.[/quote]

That's why I caveated it with "somewhat." Sure, he wasn't a heartthrob like JFK, and he didn't have the oratory skills of Obama, but he won reelection with 60 percent of the vote and won the electoral college 520-17. That's nuts, and you don't bumble your way in to that kind of electoral success.[/quote]
